I have to confess something - I have no Halloween pictures. Well, I have a few but they are really bad. We started Trick-or-Treating when it was completely dark and that's not the best time to make photos. And my decorations, which were favorably commented upon by the local kids, were saggy and sad this morning after a night of rain.
So, no Halloween pix, sorry.
But the kids had a good time. I whipped up a ghost costume for David which he loved - it consisted of an old pillowcase and two (new! never used!) cloth diapers. He did look very ghostly in the dark and he was very gratified. Every child had a friend over and then we went Trick-or-Treating. The houses where people offer candy on Halloween are far and between - Halloween is not a German tradition and many people around here don't like it. They regard it as a heathen tradition that is impounding on the Christian All Souls Day on November 1st. One of Alan's friends was not allowed to come over for that reason. Also, a few years ago, some teenagers took the "trick" in Trick-or-Treat way too far by stuffing soggy toilet paper or rotten eggs into people's mailboxes. For a year or two, nobody did anything Halloween-related at all. But this year was much better, although we still had to walk around for almost an hour to people we knew were less strict.
My cousin's house, our neighbors, some people whose kids also roamed the streets. Our house was very popular so I left my Mom in charge while we were gone. It was a cold, moon-lit night with lots of stars and the kids had a lot of fun. The haul was impressive - maybe not pounds of candy but nothing cheap, either. Last night, I sorted out the Lindt chocolate bars and hid them. Really, Swiss chocolate is wasted on kids, don't you think? Much better it gets eaten by someone who appreciates quality.
Leah was high on sugar and excited because she got to spend so much time with her friend. She did not want to go to bed. Not at all. Amazingly, Jacob got her calmed down by reading three Elephant & Piggie books to her. That was a truly sweet ending to a nice day.
