These past days, the cranes have been flying over our house. Cranes are enormous birds and they are loud. They fly in big flocks - first they form circles and sort of spiral up, up, up into the air to reach a layer with good tailwinds, then they form big Vs and fly away southwards. Mostly, they will spend the winter in balmy Southern France but some will continue on to Northern Africa.
It's a spectacle to see them migrate. It's been the talk of the town, the kids run screaming around the yard and point, and Leah waved them bye-bye.
It's cold outside. This morning, I dug out mittens and woolen hats for the boys, and tucked Leah in her arctic-proof stroller sack. There's been snow in the mountains, and frost in our yard. Time to change the tires on the car and get the plants in. I'm late with the bulbs, and Doug is mowing one last time as I'm writing this. We're in a hurry to get everything squared away. Winter is coming early this year.
Lovely. Wish we were there. Different from the weather in October 2001, eh?

Heh. We're going out tomorrow night b/c Doug's gone to Georgia next week.
No, the Georgia in the Caucasus.
