It was raining all day long. So much that the drain in the driveway clogged and overflew. I am emphatically not checking the basement for rising water levels. We need some cold weather soon, not another warm, very wet winter like last year. The year we had so much water in the basement because the soil was so saturated, there was nowhere for the water to go but up into our basement...
We puttered. Cleaned up some, did some laundry. Alan has to memorize a poem about fall which he forgot until I found the sheet under a pile of his school stuff when I cleaned up the desks today. Good thing I found it! Monday he will be tested on it.
Herbstlied
Der Frühling hat es anfangen,
Der Sommer hat's vollbracht.
Seht, wie mit seinen roten Wangen
So mancher Apfel lacht.
Es kommt der Herbst mit reicher Gabe,
Er teilt sie fröhlich aus,
Und geht dann wie am Bettelstabe,
Ein armer Mann, nach Haus.
Voll sind die Speicher und die Gaden,
Dass nichts uns mehr gebricht.
Wir wollen ihn zu Gaste laden,
Er aber will es nicht.
Er will uns ohne Dank erfreuen,
Kommt immer wieder her:
Lasst uns das Gute drum erneuen,
Dann sind wir gut wie er.
Hoffmann von Fallersleben
Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote some several hundred children's songs many of which every German kid knows and sings. He also wrote the Song of the Germans which is (in part) our national anthem today. I knew about the anthem, I didn't know he wrote all those songs. I like to learn new things.
After cleaning and puttering, Leah and I made chocolate muffins and the kids were allowed some computer and/or TV time. We have strict rules in our house but they are a bit more bendable on the weekends. As I'm typing this, Tony Stark is being attacked by evil men who want his arc reactor. Right out of his chest. I'd be a bit pissed, too.
I'm dipping in and out the Creative Live rewatch of Lindsay Adler's Retouching Class. I usually edit my photos with a very light hand, so I'm marginally interested. However, the Creative Live classes are priceless - watching them live doesn't cost anything and they have a wealth of interesting photography classes. I'm a huge fan.
Quiet days in the Rhön. Rain, rain, rain. Nothing much to report.
